Frosty Ghosts

Chugach National Forest, Alaska

A "ghost forest" is typically caused by the intrusion of salt water into a wooded area. You can find several patches of ghost forest along the Turnagain Arm, starting at Girdwood and going down to Portage Valley. These were created as a result of the 1964 earthquake, which caused the ground to drop as much as 20-30 feet in some areas along the coast near Anchorage. This particular patch rests at a pond near the mouth of the Twenty Mile River, coated with some fresh hoar frost from a couple of days of ice fog. Photo © copyright by Carl Johnson.

Artist Print

Carl uses thick, high quality fine art paper for all of his Artist Prints. These prints are made personally by the artist up to the 16x24 size, then by a professional lab for larger sizes. Printed on sheet paper, or roll paper for panoramic prints, these prints are printed to full size with the excess paper trimmed down to a small border around the image. This provides for a sufficient edge for your framing shop when it comes time to frame your print. Larger prints are shipped rolled to minimize damage and reduce shipping costs.

Metal Print

Frosty Ghosts print

Metal prints represent a new art medium for preserving photos by infusing dyes directly into specially coated aluminum sheets. Because the image is infused into the surface and not on it, your images will take on an almost magical luminescence. The ultra-hard scratch-resistant surface is waterproof/weatherproof and can be cleaned easily – just avoid direct sunlight. The prints are mounted on a floating mount for ease of hanging. These prints are shipped directly from a professional lab for lower shipping costs.

The Lumachrome print is a three-part process, with a color transfer applied to a paper material, then covered with a 1/8-inch thick acrylic face. The acrylic is coated with a P99 Non-Glare UFA 95% UV protection surface. It also includes a 3mm Comatex protective backing for edge protection and a 3/4 inch floating frame* for hanging. The print is archival quality with a 120-year life. Prints are shipped directly from the lab for lower shipping.

*Larger prints are backed with a Heavy Duty Roma rear frame.
